Professor Romeo Gurakuqi is a distinguished scholar and educator with thirty-nine years of experience in the field of modern and contemporary history. He has built a well-established academic and research career both in Albania and internationally. He currently serves as a member of the Department of Contemporary History at the Institute of History, affiliated until 2023 with the Academy of Albanological Studies and after with the Academy of Sciences of Albania. He has held the academic title of Professor since 2007.
Prof. Gurakuqi began his higher education at the University of Shkodër “Luigj Gurakuqi”, where he completed his undergraduate studies in History. He subsequently pursued postgraduate education at the University of Tirana, completing both the second and third cycles of study (Master’s and PhD), specialising in History and the interdisciplinary fields of Public Law and Political Institutions.
Postdoctoral Fellowships and Visiting Appointments
His academic trajectory has been enriched by several postdoctoral research appointments at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He was a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Global Governance in 2005, 2006, and 2010, and later served as a Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of International History in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Prof. Gurakuqi taught for twenty-two years at the University of Shkodër “Luigj Gurakuqi” and for eleven years at the European University of Tirana (UET), of which he was a co-founder. At UET, he held several senior academic and administrative positions, including: Director of the Institute of Contemporary History; Dean of the Faculty of Law; Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Chair of the Council of Professors;

Prof. Gurakuqi’s international academic engagements include visiting appointments and research fellowships at a number of prominent institutions, including: the University of London, Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz (Austria), Università degli Studi di Bari (Italy), Università degli Studi di Padova (Italy), Istituto Trentino di Cultura (Italy), and Central European University (Budapest, Hungary).

Prof. Gurakuqi remains actively involved in historical research. He is currently working on a project entitled: “Relations between the People’s Republic of Albania and the United Kingdom, 1945–1954.”
