Biography
Prof. Dr. Dijana Plaseska-Karanfilska is employed at the Research Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (RCGEB) “Georgi D. Efremov” at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MASA) in Skopje. For many years, she headed the laboratories for genomics and molecular diagnostics, and since 2024 she has been the Director of the RCGEB. She graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Skopje, where she also completed her specialization in clinical genetics, and obtained her PhD at the Faculty of Medicine, Limburg University in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Her scientific work is focused on molecular diagnostics and the genetic characterization of hereditary, malignant, and rare diseases, as well as on the introduction of advanced genetic testing into clinical practice. A significant part of her research is dedicated to reproductive genetics, breast cancer, and rare diseases. She has coordinated numerous national and international research projects, including an infrastructure project funded by the European Commission, which contributed to the development of national capacities in genomics and proteomics. Prof. Plaseska-Karanfilska has published around 190 scientific papers in international journals and has delivered more than 250 presentations at scientific conferences. She is a member of Academia Europaea and a corresponding member of MASA. She is actively involved in scientific and professional organizations and serves as Editor of the Balkan Journal of Medical Genetics and Section Editor of the EuroBiotech Journal.
