Prof. Dr. Marjan Gushev is a prominent scientist and university professor with decades of experience in computer science, with an emphasis on bioinformatics, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and the application of information technology across society. His scientific production is distinguished by originality, consistency, and continuous advancement of professional thought in his field. He has published over 500 scientific papers in renowned journals and conference proceedings, a significant part of which are indexed in leading databases (221 articles, 1042 citations, and h-index 14 in Web of Science, i.e. an average of 6.63 published and 31.58 cited articles per year or 4.75 citations per article; then 303 articles, 1957 citations, and h-index 21 in Scopus; 194 articles and 1000 citations in IEEE Xplore).
His works are distinguished by high scientific quality in methodology and practical application, which is confirmed by being included in the list of the most cited authors according to Stanford University, a list of the top 2% of all scientists in the world for publications from their entire career in 2023, 2024 and 2025, as one of the eight most prominent scientists from the Republic of North Macedonia. Two of his works received a significant number of citations and rank in the 2nd percentile of the world’s public according to citation counts.
Prof. Gushev is an IT expert and a reviewer for international scientific journals, having written over 30 reviews of articles in impact-factor journals. The results of the research and applied activity are presented at a huge number of conferences, lectures, congresses, symposiums, and workshops abroad and in the country, as evidenced by 166 published articles in proceedings indexed by Web of Science, supplemented by another 35 articles by Scopus and another 157 articles by Scholar Google. In addition, Dr. Gushev has presented 145 presentations at smaller international conferences and workshops, as well as at national seminars and symposiums. The average of 18 presentations per year over the past 32 years demonstrates successful, fruitful work with great commitment. He is active in numerous national and international projects related to informatics, biomedicine, economics, and education, as the head of 18 European (Horizon 2020, FP7, FP6) and 14 national projects, and has participated in 32 international and 5 national projects.
Prof. Gushev is particularly distinguished by his leadership and participation in the development of new technologies, as evidenced by three patents, an international CE Mark certificate for a medical device for monitoring cardiac activity, and numerous widely used application solutions. He has received two Seals of Excellence from the European Commission.
Prof. Gushev initiated the establishment of the Faculty of Informatics and Computer Engineering and actively participates in developing new curricula at all levels of higher education. As a professor, Prof. Gushev has shaped generations of young scientists, confirmed by 227 graduate students, 19 master's students, and 11 doctoral candidates (of whom 10 have been elected as professors at universities). For his scientific publications, Dr. Gushev has been awarded by the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje for the best scientist of the year 2012, the best professor in 2016, and the best scientist for the decade 2011-2020. In 2021 and 2022, he received plaques for special contributions to the development of scientific research and the internationalization and affirmation of the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje. In 2021, he was elected a corresponding member of the Slovenian Academy of Engineers IAS.
