Description
The University of Ljubljana School of social work, founded in 1992 is the successor of the former 2-year college for social workers, established in 1955. Being a member of the University of Ljubljana it is the central higher education and research institution for social work in Slovenia. It carries out a 4-year undergraduate theoretical programme of professional education for social work, leading to the diploma of social work. In the 3rd and 4th year students can choose between optional subjects, which enable a differentiation of four directions: social work in mental health, social work in enterprises and other organisations, cybernetics of psychosocial help, community care. The programme of the school is carried out by 19 full-time and 17 part-time faculty, together 36 (1997/98). The school enrolls full-time and part-time students. In 1997/98 it had 544 full-time and 213 part-time students. – In the framework of its Research Centre the school has carried out research projects since 1969, continuously from 1980. In the organisational scheme of the Ministry for Science and Technology it co-operates within the field of Criminology and Social Work. Until now it has produced nearly 60 research reports for various users (the list is on the www.uni-lj.si/vssd/). It carries out basic research in theory of casework, group- and community work, social work with family, cybernetics of psychosocial help, and methodology of research in social work. It carries out applied and developmental research in social work in social welfare, health, education, jurisprudence, business organisations and non-profit organisations etc. Besides editing the scientific and professional journal Social Work (with blind reviewing and summaries in English) and international annual International Perspectives of Social Work it publishes other professional literature too. The school has a specialised library and documentation service for social work, social welfare and related disciplines. It is a member of several international organisations, among them International Association of Schools for Social Work (where it has a member in Executive Council), Inter-university Consortium for Social Development and had hosted international professional conferences and meetings.
