Legend
Description
The Murska Sobota Regional Museum was founded in 1955 by the People's Committee of Murska Sobota and was housed in Murska Sobota castle. Along with its basic activity, the museum conducts dynamic research, education, restoration, conservation and exhibition activities. It occasionally organises conferences and international symposia. One of its most important new activities is publishing. The museum's most important publication is Zbornik soboškega muzeja (The Murska Sobota Museum Journal), which first appered in 1991. After the renovation of the museum premises, which took several years, the staff opted for a complete overhaul of the permanent museum display. The project of setting up a new permanent display demanded an in –depth study of the region which would take into consideration all aspects of the humanities and social sciences, because for in Slovenia the Pomurje region is known as an idyllic land of storks, a special, even exotic place. The curators of the museum were therefore aware of the difficult and responsible task which they were about to undertake: first they had to research this part of Slovenia in every possible way, then piece together its true historical, social, political, economic, artistic and spiritual image, and finally present it in the form of a museum display, which was opened to the public in 1997. But our work has not came to an end with the opening of the permanent display. We wish to maintain close contact with visitors, this entails additional activities, such as workshop for children and adults, more temporary and touring exhibitions, youth research camps, scientific symposia and more dynamic methods of publishing.
