Description
The Science and Research Centre of the Republic of Slovenia in Koper (hereinafter referred to as "ZRS Koper") was founded on 1st December 1994. The rights of the founder are practiced by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia and the Ministry of Science and Technology. Its co-founders are the Community of Littoral Councils (its legal successors being the Koper City Council and the Councils of Izola and Piran) and the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts. The spheres of activity of the ZRS Koper are Mediterranean studies with an emphasis on the research on Slovene Istra with interdisciplinary approach of humanistic, social and natural sciences, i.e.: - basic and applied research, - expert advising and consulting, - education, - organising meetings of scientists and experts, - publicising and publishing, - documentation and librarianship. Research and educational activities of the ZRS Koper are focused on the study of cultural features and historical development of Slovene Istra and of contemporary issues arising from its situation between state and national borders, multicultural and multiethnic relations in the Mediterranean and in Istra. ZRS Koper is taking part in international cooperation in the fields of science and technology and is linking up with similar organisations in the world. In cooperation with the Littoral University Centre, the ZRS Koper provides the necessary academic structure for a potential development of high educational institutions in the Primorska region. This is why special attention is paid to employing junior researchers, who will gradually constitute a nucleus of the future Primorska University. ZRS Koper is very active also in the sphere of publishing. Best known is its scientific interdisciplinary journal Annals : Annals for Istran and Mediterranean Studies, which with its programme scheme indicates its links with the ZRS Koper. Important publications are also Acta Histriae, anthology of scientific articles, and Knjižnica Annales, collection of professional monographs.
