Abstract
The intended research programme follows the directions of the previous programme groups (period 2009-2015) Political, cultural, economic, social and religious history of Styria, Carinthia and Prekmurje and its place in the Central European area, as well as The past of North Eastern Slovenia and neighbouring regions of Austria, Hungary and Croatia, regarding conceptualization of theoretical foundations. The base of the project is again going to be the geographical area of the North Eastern Slovenia in the widest sense of this term. The area is a vivid and by its relief very heterogeneous geographical region. A personally improved group is therefore going to try to dedicate itself to research questions, connected with geographical components and smaller units of the said area with even greater intensity.
An important novelty in the forthcoming period will be a consistent linking of events in the treated area within the borders of the Republic of Slovenia to development processes in wider Central European area, but also in the European Southeast. Influences of these currents on the central treated area of the Slovenian Northeast, as well as possible tensions between them, will thereby serve as a crucial fil rouge of our research.
Even more than before multiculturalism, questions of symbiosis, tolerance and intolerance, social and ethnic minorities in different historical periods will be put in spotlight. Structure of the programme group was harmonized with programme focal points.
The programme group will, if confirmed, continue to research many various topics in most historical periods whereby a centre of gravity will remain on items of economic, political, social, religious and cultural history from the last five or six centuries.
Local, regional and supraregional forms of activities of different parties and movements, formation of social, political and ideological concepts among populace of all ethnic communities, living in the mentioned area and in its neighbourhood, and the concrete forms of conflicts between them, will remain one of the focal points. In this regard particular attention will be dedicated to the period immediately after the both world wars when it came to essential changes on various levels of life. In similar way and based on an interdisciplinary approach topics from recent past, from the period of independence movement and democratization in Slovenia, will be treated, again with the wider regional framework and developments in it emphasized.
Personal renewal of the programme group will bring new themes to the spotlight, e. g. history of activities of secret services, diplomatic history, as well as connections between regions of North Eastern Slovenia and the Venetian sphere of influence, yet none of them is going to be subjected to an isolated treatment.
One of the crucial goals of the proposed programme group is going to be the preparation and publishing of a comprehensive encyclopedic dictionary with the working title Historical Dictionary of North Eastern Slovenia.
Significance for science
Research is directed at complex analyses of a space as well as processes, interactions and circumstances in it regarding interethnic and other relations in various periods. In the space multiethnic and multicultural tendencies were formed through the centuries and created an impressive fresco of life within the borders of regions and subregions. A deep understanding of relations and interactions between individual and society and between individual and institutions will be a precious contribution to the formation of such relations in a broader European area. The area of interest, widened as suggested by the programme group, will on the other hand offered many new dates in the area of their special interest to scientists from neighbouring countries and from Europe. Since we are part of process of constant scientific and project exchanges for quite a long time, we are justified to expect that the achieved scientific results will help the group members with their inclusion and an appropriate participation in current scientific trends around us.
Significance for the country
The intensive treatment of lesser known and especially outstanding scientific topics will certainly be helpful for many regional, provincial and local factors in culture, education, science, tourism and in the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. Some aspects of political, economic, cultural, social and religious history of different parts of the included area even weren’t object of scientific analysis so far. To shorten our point, the planned results of the programme group create concrete possibilities for the development of tourism, mass and individual recreation, trekking, cultural events and new forms of agriculture. That all can certainly be a way to creation of new working places, to successful execution of structural and development micro projects in different local environments and to concrete additional employing of individuals in many other activities, connected to the mentioned areas.
