Abstract
Recording, researching, analyzing, mass media processing of the material from the areas which are researched by the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology: architecture, food culture, life cycle customs, holiday and ritual, family and kinship, literary folklore, folk narrative, cataloguing of professional literature and central documentation. The main object of the research is methodical and permanent complementation, commentation, and protection of collections, and their processing with modern technical procedures in order to make them as accessible to public as possible. We record traditional culture, cultural changes, and innovations in all Slovenian regions and also in the neighboring countries of Italy, Austria, and Hungary. Our interest is focused on the relationship between tradition and innovation. The new aspect of our approach is reflected in the possibilities offered by the computer which makes it possible to establish links between different kinds of information and written and audiovisual material. Our collections serve as the basis for ethnological research of Slovenian culture and are available to a broad specter of users wishing to learn more and to spread the knowledge about it through different media.
