Abstract
The subject of research is individual, family, local and regional visual culture, displayed in contemporary visual production and in interaction between its socio-cultural background and the media. The hypothetical sources to be taken into consideration are: home video archives, local CATV networks and minoritys’ TV programmes.
According to the working hypothesis home video production includes the specific visual expression, as opposed to the standardized visual expression of a professional production. Therefore it clearly reflects its socio-cultural background. In ethnological terms it means that home video production reveals the cultural patterns of the authors and of the community. Visual records made by local amateur photographers are a kind of the symbolic representation of cultural and social values on individual, local and ethnical level. The last characteristics is especially obvious after the analysis of home video archives in the minority environment.
The public visual media, like CATV and minority television, show the socio-cultural origin in a more sophisticated way. On the formal level the local cultural origin is hidden by the standardized visual expression, while it is clearly seen in the programme schedule which reflects ethnical, political, or commercial background of the media.
