Abstract
In the research project new techniques for lossless stationary image compression based on the wavelet transform have been evaluated. The wavelet transform is accomplished using filter banks which could be optimised according to image statistics. During the process of compression an adaptive algorithm based on evaluation criteria is used to select the filters. Because current objectivity criteria based on mean square error does not give enough information about the visual impression of the image if large compression rates are used, a new criteria involving human subjective criteria is incorporated. Here fuzzy logic is used for human subjective criteria inclusion which represents an original contribution to the field of lossless image compression using wavelet transformation. The method is applicable for common images and also for synthetic images acquired during the visualisation process of measured data (SAR-Synthetic Aperture Radar images).
