Abstract
Positive tests for autoantibodies against self-antigens may correlate with specific clinical conditions, disease features that are or can be of autoimmune origin. Early detection and appropriate interpretation of the presence of these antibodies may encourage earlier treatment and also offers a means of monitoring disease progress and response to the therapy.
Project was designed to 1/ add some insight into the mechanisms leading to the production of autoantibodies, their specific role in certain rheumatic and other non-organ specific autoimmune conditions or diseases with suspected autoimmune aetiology including the examination of test systems on an international level for the detection of autoantibodies with the sensitivity and reproducibility of different methodologies and 2/ define the significance of molecular structures of some target antigens (with special emphasis on the phospholipids and endothelial cell antigens) in the production of autoantibodies in animal models and human diseases together with the introduction of relevant new research technique (immune blotting, monoclonal antibodies, recombinant antigens, including deletion mutants, cell cultures).
