Abstract
Mutants of ammodytoxin will be prepared in order to determine the amino acid residues responsible for the high toxicity of venom phospholipase A2. We will identify parts of the protein surface involved in the interaction with acceptors in synaptosomal membranes and those involved in subsequent interactions with yet unknown structures in the nerve endings. Investigations of the genes of snake venom multigene families are aimed at explaining the accelerated evolution of these genes in which the introns are more conserved than exon, in contrast to Kimura’s neutral theory of evolution. We will also investigate in more detail the evolution and distribution of retrotransposons in reptiles and the horizontal transfer of these repetitive DNA elements between distant vertebrate classes.
