Abstract
Periodontal disease is one of the most widespread disease in Europe and elsewhere. In the proposed project we inten to survey the spouses and children of 55-, 65- and 75-year-old citizens in order to find out the influence of heritable factors on development and progression of periodontal disease. Correlation of periodontal conditions with early and late complications of diabetes mellitus will be avaluated sa well. The role of cytokines, cysteine proteinases, free radicals and sress in development of periodonral disease will be studied. MR imaging will be studied as diagnostic tool for patient with periodontal disease. Improvement in periodontal treatment will be studied by application of the inhibitors of cysteine proteinases and free radicals and by use of Er:YAG laser.
