Abstract
Switching devices represent one of the most comprehensive parts of electric power systems. The development of switching devices in the recent years was focused on adding of signal and control elements to the well-known principles of electric arc extinguishing and disposition of devices in switchgear.
The project introduces a new approach to research and development in the field of switching devices. This new approach comprises introduction of artificial intelligence, mathematical modelling of individual elements and devices, and calculations of electromagnetic fields. Artificial neural networks are one of the bases for the designing of devices and a very useful support in monitoring and control of their operation, such as preventive detection of potential failures. Another important step in the designing of switching devices is mathematical modelling of power system elements. Calculation of electromagnetic fields allows us to determine the voltages in dielectric materials of the device, as well as how electric arc originates and propagates through the device. This also enables to find the ways to prevent the propagation of electric arc. The result of this research work will be a new concept of integrated intelligent switchgear that will in a completely new way perform its primary function (conducting and interrupting of electric current), as well as functions of controlling and protecting of the entire device. The main purpose of the development of new switchgear is to ensure the maximum security of people working with switchgears, reliability of the electricity supply and to prevent the malfunctioning of the devices.
