Abstract
he purpose of the TellMe project is to establish the framework of virtual support for breast cancer patients, their families, friends, and health care providers and thus help them cope with the disease more effectively. The primary objective will be to provide access to the information about the disease and its treatment to patients and all others concerned. The establishing of this virtual framework will create a flexible environment that will enable exchange of information between all who are involved in the breast cancer treatment. On the other hand, to those who have been successful in dealing with various personal and physical aspects of the breast cancer treatment, this will help develop a sense of personal accomplishment and appreciate the value of the effort.
The second objective of the TellMe project is to gather, consolidate, analyze, and structure
data in a manner which will be beneficial to patients, physicians and researchers. The data of interest are of both qualitative and quantitative nature. Our intention is to analyze the e-mail data collected from patient discussion lines in the North America (USA, Canada). The process of collecting and analyzing pertinent data will also have a wider significance, since it will serve as a useful reference to other researches concerning breast cancer treatment.
Due to the complex structure of information, we can foresee three main functional units within the patient support system concept: (1) multimedia disease description, (2) computer manageable clinical knowledge structured through advice and self-help, and (3)
teleconferencing capabilities.
Among beneficiaries of the system we expect to find patients, health care professionals and
organizations, and society at large. Further benefits could be drawn from the experience gathered through the development and implementation of the project, since it could be used in other application areas where disease treatment lasts long and demands from patients a lot of physical and inner strength.
