Abstract
The present clinical research work deals with the examination of the latest developments in the field of treatment of breast cancer patients, i.e. the type of cancer that is often referred to as ''curable'' though it does not truly deserve to be always defined by this term. The project is aimed to find out the most successful treatment methods, in fact, as effective as earlier ones, yet easier to sustain. The research results can be immediately applied in every day routine of a medical doctor, as it was also the case in the Research Projects LBCS I-V, goung on from 1978 onwards. Research Projects LBCS I-IV indicated that adjuvant systemic treatment is beneficial for post-menopausal women, which is in contrast to the so far recognized general opinion that the systemic treatment is beneficial only to pre-menopausal women. (The recruitment of patients was completed in 1981.) Research Project LBCS V demonstrated that perioperative adjuvant systemic treatment does not have the same effect as classic treatment methods with the exception of specific sub-groups of patients. (The recruitment of patients was completed in 1985.) Research Projects IBCS VI-VII demonstrated that adjuvant systemic treatment administered in 3 cycles may be as effective as a classic treatment method of 6 cycles only in certain sub-groups of patients. (The recruitment of patients was completed in 1993.) The recruitment of the patients for the Research Projects IBCS VIII and IX will probably be completed by 1999.
