Abstract
The prevalence of thyroid disease (euthyroid goitre, autoimmune thyroid disorders) in a population is a readily measurable and raliable indicator of iodine intake and environmental pollution. Periodic epidemiological surveys of thyroid disease in high risk population groups provide an accurate method for assessing, without the use of chemical analyses, the potential risks to health arising from iodine deficiency and exposure to pollutants in the past.
