Abstract
Production management Largest European research of manufacturing activities. Research goals are linked to analysis of different parameters in manufacturing companies in Industry 4.0 era. The focus will be on studying the diffusion of new production and IC technologies and their impact on company performance, energy efficiency, the capability to develop products and services, production off-shoring and backsourcing etc. We will develop a portal and supportive environment for SMEs to help them increase the innovation potential and to achieve competitive advantage. It will allow users to access databases and knowledge in academic institutions, and create a network link to knowledge-based organizations – innovation ecosystem. An intelligent system of holistic processing of support information for new product development (with the introduction of neural networks) will be developed, and upgraded with a model of product lifecycle forecasting; both will be applied and verified in selected companies. In the field of ergonomics due to new advanced technologies, our research will focus on ergonomics studies aimed to prepare new directions for work places design. Shifting from mass production to the customized production (make-to-order) is evident. Key objectives, such as short throughput times, meeting of due dates, lower inventories, advantageous cost-time profile, linked with a value stream, cost reduction and resource utilisation, can be achieved with appropriate scheduling of tasks. With the introduction of evolutionary methods in make-to-order manufacturing scheduling process an optimal fulfilment of weighted objectives could be achieved (multi-criteria optimization). Projects are receiving a crucial role in increasingly dynamic environment. Sustainable performance and stability of organizations become largely dependent on the success of the projects. Traditional criteria of assessing the performance of projects are no longer sufficient, thus we will develop new project management metrics and key performance indicators, customised to the different typologies of projects and requirements of the various project stakeholders. Dimensional metrology With the development of advanced technologies in the automotive and aerospace industry, nanomaterials industry and other industries, the harmonious development of metrology and quality assurance systems is becoming essential for the competitiveness of our companies on international markets. The objectives of the research program are consistent with the requirements of international standards for quality management, and as well with EU research projects. In the field of metrology, we will expand the base of standards and develop new measurement techniques that will enable superior quality measurement in industry. We will focus primarily on laser interferometry, form measurements and optical measurements. In addition to very important applicative value, the research program will also have a big scientific value, which will enable us to publish the results in quality international scientific publications.
Significance for science
Production management Research activities within research programme aim at achieving internationally comparable scientific research results. In science a process of knowledge specialisation is more and more accompanied by the process of knowledge integration. Production management as a subarea of technical disciplines has during its evolution aligned with management science. Production management can be therefore identified as an area, that evolved when technical and managerial sciences intertwined. Integration emerged as a result of the need to understand phenomenon that appear in R&D and technologically advanced manufacturing companies. In the future we can expect even stronger combinations of technical and organisational knowledge. The engineers have to be aware of the meaning of innovation – how to transfer an idea into commercialised business. Project management as an interdisciplinary field is of crucial importance as project implementation requires integration and aligned cooperation of different disciplines. Project management is also faced with a rapid scientific development, that being consequence of its importance in companies and other organisations. The current project management concepts and models must be theoretically strengthen and adjust the project management development to all project types and to all relevant project environments, considering also change and risk management and the current impact of business environment. There is a larger set of scientific journals that cover the integration of engineering and organisational knowledge and direct the research activities of the proposed research programme: Journal of Operations Management, International Journal of Operations & Production Management, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Technovation, International Journal of Project Management, Project Management Journal etc. The existence of mentioned journals proves that production management presents relevant scientific area with its own conceptual knowledge and scientific identity. Creation and transfer of new knowledge produced by the researcher of the programme will have a large importance for the further evolution of the science and that will be applicable in the frame of ensuring efficiency and higher competitiveness of SMEs. In the scope of dominating technical area (according to research content) the pluralism has a different meaning than in humanistic or sociology since the basis for analysis are not individual findings, but empirically or mathematically proven facts. A special superiority of the research programme is publishing of international scientific journal International Journal of Simulation Modelling, where our research programme member is Editor-in-Chief. In the last period we have drastically increased the number of our publications, where the results of our research have already been presented to public in scientific journals; scientific monographs and in the future we expect a further rise of the publications. Dimensional metrology Basic goal of research in the field of dimensional metrology is to develop reliable universal systems for assuring traceability of optical and mechanical top precise standards, where the limitations of measurement uncertainty are approaching range below 10 nm. Fundamental research in this field is preformed almost exclusively in national metrology institutes. Published results indicate that a big portion of research effort is put into developing and upgrading measurement principles, which shall be adjusted to the development of measurement instruments and specific conditions in a single laboratory. The research in this programme will base on carefully planned experiments and on analytical calculations and simulations. The results of successful research will be demonstrated primarily through improved metrological capabilities of the Slovenian national metrology institute (CMCs, published in the Key Com
Significance for the country
Production management The research programme Advanced concepts of production management and dimensional metrology is the only one in Slovenia that integrates technical-technological knowledge in production engineering with production management, therefore it combines mechanical engineering and business and organisational knowledge. As such it is fasten to the strategic management and especially project management for strategy and projects implementation, not only in connection with production but wider with holistic planning in companies and extensive environment. The research group performs a unique integrating, interdisciplinary role with results that contribute to increase of competitiveness of manufacturing companies, to taking advantage of business opportunities and sustainable development of Slovenia. Our companies are aware of the importance of the research programme, as well are foreign R&D institutions with which we have excellent partnerships. The inclusion of researchers with different professional and scientific background is a necessary condition for an optimum use of the modern analytical and research methods and interpretation of research findings. The concepts that will be developed will beside theoretical adequacy (research in real companies) focused on applicative solution finding in manufacturing companies. The research results will therefore contribute to increase of competitiveness of companies and foster building innovative, efficient and on knowledge-based economy with long term stable growth. Competitiveness of Slovenian manufacturing companies to a large extent depends on their capabilities to integrate advanced manufacturing technologies and manage technological data and information flows as well as successful implementation of investment projects for assuring production. The research results will help with building knowledge that will enable transfer of R&D and technological results in competitive advantage and seizing business opportunities. Based on the mentioned topics we can recognise the role of project management because the project oriented strategy implementation as a project production is becoming inevitably in companies and other environment. Project management competences are of crucial importance for acquiring European (financial) means and for preparation and implementation important national projects, written in national strategy till the year 2023. We have to emphasise that the research programme is a basis for development of interdisciplinary study programme Industrial Management, implemented by Faculty of mechanical engineering and Faculty of Economics & Business. Dimensional metrology In advanced industries like car and aircraft industry, production of nanomaterial, microelectronics, medical equipment etc., as well as in medicine, energy supply, traffic, research and some other branches, quality measurements are indispensable part of assuring and monitoring process quality. Quality processes guarantee quality products and services, while quality products and services are primary condition for competitiveness of a company in market. Fast technological development initiates rapid growth of needs for precise measurements. Precision requirements in the field of dimensional measurements have reached nanometre range. This trend is very clearly visible on worldwide and European level, as well as in Slovenia. The contents of the research programme in the metrology field is completely adapted to the above trends. The results will be directly applicable in industry and other professions. The research results -  especially new measurement standards and calibration methods will enable higher level of international comparability of calibration results (especially of primary standard) and measurement systems. Better integration of Slovenian metrology system into global metrology infrastructure will be enabled. Higher reputation of Slovenian metrology will enable Slovenian industry to easier re
