Abstract
Next to drinking water supplies from public water distribution systems, many users in the Republic of Slovenia have private drinking water distribution systems (hereinafter PDWDS). PDWDS or private supply with drinking water is a supply of buildings and construction engineering facilities with drinking water in areas, where municipality does not provide public service and the water supply is obtained from underground or superficial waters based on a water permit, issued in accordance with water regulations: pt. 5 of Art. 2 of the Decree on the drinking water supply (hereinafter the Decree) http://www.pisrs.si/Pis.web/pregledPredpisa?id=URED6071. Since private supply can apply to water distribution systems, which provide water for more than 100 users, as well as for only one household, the sources of drinking water can differ by size, water quality as well as the management of the supply itself. The data from national monitoring, which is performed in the areas with over 50 users and guarantees minimal data on the drinking water quality, show that the most supplied areas, providing drinking water for 50-500 people (in 2016, around 560 areas, providing water for approximately 98,000 people), which is intended for PDWDS, do not have a proper expert management and the preparation of drinking water, whereas somewhere water protection areas are not even defined. It is expected that drinking water quality is similar or even worse in smaller PDWDS or PDWDS with less than 50 users. The objectives of the research project are the following: -Implemented situation analysis on drinking water quality from PDWDS monitoring; -Improved information system on the drinking water quality from PDWDS for the areas, where national monitoring of drinking water is performed. Prepared evaluation of the microbiological and chemical drinking water quality from PDWDS in these areas; -Improved information system on the drinking water quality from PDWDS for the areas, where national monitoring of drinking water is not being performed. Prepared evaluation of the microbiological and chemical drinking water quality from PDWDS in these areas; -Defined the wholesome list of the carriers of water rights (permits) for PDWDS. The inclusion of this list in information system; -The support to the implementation of 1st objective of the Action plan for the implementation of The strategy of the RS for children and adolescent health in the connection with the environment; -Supplemented information system with data on drinking water quality form PDWDS, for which there are currently not data available. Performed analysis of the drinking water quality data; -Online manual for the maintenance of private water distribution system. The aim of the project is to gain a better perspective on the problem of drinking water quality in PDWDS, regardless of the scope of the supply are and the inclusion in the programme of national monitoring. Another aim is to publish the findings, which will improve knowledge in this field, raise awareness and readiness to perform measures for the management of risks and risky events, which can prevent negative consequences for population health, related to drinking water from PDWDS.
Significance for science
Expansion of knowledge and expertise on drinking water quality from private distribution systems in Slovenia will contribute to better recognisability and discussions on the problem in expert circles. Everything will be supported with supplemented, more clear and precise data presentation in the information system.
Significance for the country
The progress of the economy is closely connected to the ability of the society and an individual to work, which depends on their health or working ability, which is in great part connected to the drinking water quality. We expect that project results will contribute to the improvement of drinking water quality in PDWDS and consequently reduce drinking water-related health risks of the users and higher productivity in work and production, presence at work, as well as reducing costs, connected to drinking water-related diseases.
