Abstract
TOPIC   The topic of the proposed project is the actual presence of the topic of Slovenian emigration in the syllabuses, textbooks and teaching materials of Slovenian primary and secondary schools. The project’s objective is to analyse the actual state of things and then develop suggestions about which topics of Slovenian emigration should necessarily be included in the syllabuses, textbooks and teaching materials, but also to find and suggest ways of implementing this inclusion (inter)institutionally.     OBJECTIVES   1. To analyse the actual presence of the topic of Slovenian emigration in the primary and secondary schools in the Republic of Slovenia with a special emphasis on the syllabuses, textbooks and teaching materials for Slovenian language, history, geography, ethics, sociology and society.   2. To study, on the basis of the analysis of the actual presence of the topic of Slovenian emigration in the primary and secondary schools in the Republic of Slovenia with a special emphasis on the syllabuses, textbooks and teaching materials, their influence on the knowledge that the pupils of primary and secondary schools have about the problems of emigration.   3. To ascertain the level of knowledge about the topic of Slovenian emigration among the pupils of Slovenian primary and secondary schools and the broadest walks of life in the Republic of Slovenia based on a selected sample. 4. To prepare a suggestion of concrete contents from the history of Slovenian emigration and the contemporary emigration of Slovenians that have to be included in the syllabuses, textbooks and teaching materials of particular subjects and inter-subject activities.   5. To suggest concrete ways of institutionally implementing and actually achieving a greater presence of the contents of Slovenian emigration in the Slovenian school system and in the awareness of the inhabitants of the Republic of Slovenia.   RESEARCH METHODS   In the research, we will use a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. At the beginning, we will review the existing research and literature on the project’s topic.   The research will be based on a comparative analysis of the existing syllabuses, textbooks and teaching materials for the following subjects: Slovenian language, history, geography, ethics, sociology and society.   The analysis of the level of knowledge about the topic of Slovenian emigration among the pupils of Slovenian primary and secondary schools and the broader population based on a selected sample will be carried on the basis of an online survey.   We will examine the ways of institutionally achieving a greater presence of the topics of Slovenian emigration in the Slovenian school system and in the awareness of the inhabitants of the Republic of Slovenia with the help of in-depth interviews with the persons responsible for the planning and changing of syllabuses, textbooks and teaching materials for Slovenian language, history, geography, ethics, sociology and society.   Substantive suggestions will be developed on the basis of the obtained results, the study of literature and long-time experiences of the pedagogical members of the research group.   RESULTS   The main result of the project will be the final report with an analysis of the collected material, the interpretation of the final findings from all packages and our recommendations for the Office for Slovenians Abroad, the Ministry of Education and Sport, the National Education Institute Slovenia and the authors and larger publishers of textbooks and teaching materials. The final report will be freely available on the project’s website. The interim and final results will include scientific and professional publications of the research results. The dissemination of the results will include public presentations for the Office for Slovenians Abroad, the Slovenian Research Agency and representatives of other state bodies concerned with this topic, presentations at Slovenian a
Significance for science
The Law on relations of the Republic of Slovenia with Slovenians abroad (Uradni list RS, no. 34/2006) states that Slovenia will protect and promote the development of Slovenian language, culture, national heritage and national identity of Slovenians abroad (Article 9) and that research institutions in Slovenia should pay special attention to the research of past and present social reality of Slovenian communities around the world (Article 36). With its research into the inclusion of the topics on Slovenian emigration in the curricula, textbooks and other learning materials for primary and secondary schools in the Republic of Slovenia, the project team wishes to contribute vitally to the consolidation of migration studies in Slovenia as one of the most relevant fields of research that is still drawing much more academic attention abroad than in Slovenia. Migrations of Slovenians and members of other ethnic groups during the past two centuries have been one of the basic social processes on the national, European and global levels. This is why it is of vital importance to examine the extent and quality of the present inclusion of these topics in Slovenian educational contents. The original research findings on the inclusion of Slovenian emigration topics in Slovenian educational materials will offer new insights and thus present an important part of the international scientific corpus. Thanks to the diverse composition of the project team, with members drawn from the humanities and social sciences, the interdisciplinary research methods employed by the group are frequently new. The project team will continue to introduce its methodological innovations and original findings to the international academic audiences through the international publication of partial results and participation in international projects, conferences and academic associations.
Significance for the country
Our results will also influence the content of textbooks and self-contained workbooks, that is, the publishers (authors, editors) will include these topics as teaching content in their textbooks and self-contained workbooks. A better knowledge and understanding of the topic of Slovenian emigration can indirectly lead to the young becoming aware of the extent of Slovenian emigration across the world and, based on the suggested activities, also to them themselves establishing contact with Slovenian emigrants and their descendants, with whom they can also make business connections.
