Abstract
The objective of this project research is to create a growing database of orthoepic problems of contemporary standard Slovenian and designing its first component, i.e. the collection treating accent position problems of contemporary standard Slovenian. This is the first comprehensive and systematic synchronic description of accentuation in contemporary standard Slovenian, which will substantially broaden the knowledge of accent position dynamics of contemporary standard Slovenian. The working process will be multifaceted and methodologically diverse, its objective being a realistic description of accent position problematics. The work is planned to be executed in 6 work clusters. Through analysis and interpretation of existing research, thorough targeted inquiries among professional language users who deal with spoken standard language, through surveys and crowdsourcing, we will identify new accent position problem clusters, recognize the needs of the language community and the collective linguistic intuition of Slovenian language speakers. We will obtain language data from scratch and will rigorously analyse, evaluate and interpret them and will then try to elucidate rules of contemporary Slovenian accentuation that stem from the language itself. This will also have impact on the development of language technology tools and applications. The growing dictionary database of orthoepic problems of standard Slovenian is a novelty in Slovenian linguistics. Despite numerous open problems regarding the orthoepy and phonology of the Slovenian language, there is still no database that would be limited to orthoepically problematic lexical units from the very outset. Another novelty in Slovenian linguistics is also the collection of accent position problems of the Slovenian language, since such collection has never been created for Slovenian.
Significance for science
The proposed database of orthoepic problems and the collection of accent position problems of contemporary Slovenian, which is based on the former, represent an important contribution to the field of orthoepy and at the same time also the beginning of continuous care for spoken standard Slovenian. In the future, this may result in an orthoepic manual, which Slovenian speakers are in real need of. The research results will encourage further linguistic research, new findings will make it easier to study other forms of spoken Slovenian and make them more meaningful. A systematic overview of the synchronic accentuation dynamics also represents an important source of material for diachronic research into the Slovenian language.
Significance for the country
Project research findings will be of general relevance, since they will have impact on all those areas where spoken standard Slovenian is used (on a daily basis). Additionally, the new obtained data will be directly useful also in pedagogical and lexicographic work. The growing database of orthoepic problems will enable to coordinate activities in the field of speech technologies with activities in the field of language research, which is important for a modern information society. Findings of the above-mentioned research will also contribute to the development of non-humanistic research disciplines and to the creation of a multilingual information society, since they will be directly useful for upgrading and developing different language technology tools and applications.
