Abstract
SJÖGREN’S syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder which affects the lacrimal and salivary glands, as well as other exocrine glands, leading to functional impairment and mucosal dryness. It is often associated with systemic extraglandular manifestations. SS can occur alone (primary SS) or in association with almost any of the systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (secondary SS). The aim of our study is to estimate the incidence of SS in Slovenia. Different diagnostic criteria for SS will be applied and compared. All participants will be asked six standard questions, which are part of EEC diagnostic criteria. Besides to the questionnaire, all patients will be subjected to a Schirmer-I test, Rose Bengal test, fluorescein test, unstimulated salivary flow test, salivary scintigraphy. Immunoserological tests (rheumatoid factors - RF, antinuclear antibodies - ANA, antibodies against different intracellular antigens – anti-ENA) as well as specific antibodies against viruses (HCV and HTLV I) will be performed. If necessary histopathological investigation of the minor salivary glands will be carried out. American authors are convinced that European criteria for pSS are far too lose, thus enabling too many diagnosed pSS patients. Nevertheless, there have been no data published neither about the incidence of pSS nor about any kind of comparison of two different widely used diagnostic criteria.
