Abstract
The project has its scientific basis in the Slavic and European dialectology (OLA, ALE, DiWA, VerbaAlpina). The objective of the research is to develop an electronic version of the Slovenian Linguistic Atlas (SLA), which will enable free access to archived original video and sound recordings from the field research and thus make them accessible for wider professional use. This will be done in parallel with the preparation of the new volume of the SLA (with linguistic analysis, ethnological clarifications and geolinguistic presentation of dialect lexis from the thematic field »village«). Opening up the possibility of active user participation (citizen/public science), which will enable further improvements of the dialect database (collecting material through crowd sourcing) is a significant innovation in (Slavic) geolinguistics. The database will represent a source for the glossary of the growing e-dictionary of Slovenian dialects with georeferenced data. The project is based on the scientific bases of the following disciplines: – linguistics, i.e. dialectology, geolinguistics and comparative linguistics (completing the database by gathering dialect material, with special emphasis on the dialect material gathered on the very edge of the Slovenian linguistic territory; synchronic-diachronic linguistic analysis; geolinguistic presentation of dialect lexemes); – information technology (technical updates of databases, incorporation of the analysed dialect material into the portal www.fran.si and preparation of program tools for interactive atlas of Slovene dialects, integrating citizens into e-collecting the dialect material through crowdsourcing); – geography, i.e. cartography, spatial analysis of the data, GIS (preparation of suitable cartographic foundation for geolinguistic presentation of dialect material; georeferentiation of all data); – digital humanities (connecting linguistic knowledge, presented on e-linguistic maps and accessible on the Internet, with other open e-sources). With the help of information technologies the following databases will be prepared and accessible on the Interactive atlas of Slovene dialects (i-SLA) website: – map of Slovene dialects, – collection of linguistic maps with commentaries, enriched with ethnological explanations, – collection of phonetically transcribed dialect lexemes (in indexes), exported into an xml file, – collection of morphologically analysed dialect lexemes (in standardised transcription), – collection of sound-files of dialect lexemes and texts, – collection of phonological descriptions of local dialects, – collection of relevant metadata about recorded dialect material, – collection of pictures (drawings), – collection of scanned archived field material (dialect records of SLA). Slovenian Linguistic Atlas will be accessible in printed and electronic versions: – as e-version of linguistic atlas it will be incorporated into the dictionary portal www.fran.si (as html), – as linguistic atlas it will be accessible on the website http://sla.zrc-sazu.si/#v (as a pdf file), The Interactive atlas of Slovene dialects (i-SLA) will follow the next principles: – with carefully structured and guided participation of users (crowdsourcing) completion of dialect database will be possible; – citizens will be able to contribute recordings of local dialects as well as photo and video material, connected with Slovene material and intangible heritage; this will enable documenting of development of Slovene dialects from the middle of the 20th century (when the first recordings with the help of SLA questionnaire were done) till the end of the second decade of the 21st century and further; – georeferenced dialect database will be linked to other open access databases, i.e. dialect corpora (e.g. GO-KO: http://jt.upr.si/GOKO/), online dialect dictionaries and the dictionary portal www.fran.si, selected virtual ethnological collections, data about net-points (villages), linguistic bibliographies about l
