Abstract
The starting point of our research project will be some crucial results that we obtained during the work on our previous project (''Limits of Philosophy''). Especially the analysis of the notion of subjectivity has brought forward the questions of contingency and infinity that we would like to explore in detail in the present project. We will start by analysing the notion of contingency as it has been articulated in the scholastic discussions of the difference between essence and existence. Special concern will be dedicated to those disputed questions of medieval philosophy which reveal the inherent linkage of the contingent character of created beings and the concept of the infinity, say, the question of the infinite God''s power, discussions of the eternity of the world, discussions of the possibility of the actual infinity, etc. We will proceed with the examination of the different modalities of contingency in contemporary philosophy and with the analysis of the implications of contemporary conceptualizations of infinity for the theory of subject. We will also focus on the question of the relationship between the notions of the universal and the infinite.
