Abstract
The relation between the towns and the environs is one of very important or even the most important motive power of the historical development on the slovene territories. Beside of economical growth the relation exerted an influence also on the ethnical circumstances. Especially on the region of Primorska the relation (city- surroundings) represented at the same time also the relation between the Italian and the Slaves (Slovenes, Croats). The difficult cohabitation of these two national and linguistic communities characterized the social and political life in the Primorska (Austrian Litoral) in fhe period from 1848 to 1918.
