Abstract
In the Slovene national question tradition of ethnic studies, the relations between (folk) religiousness and ethnic belongings were never explored; after 1945, any such topic was bound to be suppressed or severely marginalised. Nevertheless, there persisted an axiomatic belief that especially in rural parts of the Slovene minorities'' terrritories in neighbouring countries, folk religiousness, and with it, the work of lower ranking priesthood were strong agents of preservation of Slovene language and consciousness. The project will explore the contents, contexts and mechanisms of such corroborative role of (folk) religiousness with respect to ethnic belongings in Valcanale, Italy.
