Abstract
World production and processing of polyester fibres is high. However, the manufacturers have problems with the synthesis of fibres. Beside high-molecular polyester, numerous undesirable low molecular fractions- oligomers appear, depending on conditions and disturbing factors. Oligomers represents serious problem in PES fibres dyehouses because at conventional high- temperature dyeing in acid medium they diffuse from fibres onto surface and cause inequality of dyed material and dusting during winding which has negative effect on environment and health. There are few possibilities to eliminate oligomers; one of them is alkaline pretreatment of fibres, another is the dyeing in alkaline medium. This method of dyeing has been tested neither in Slovenia nor in Europe. Although certain producers of dyes offer some disperse dyes fast to alkali, no significant data about this issue can be found in literature. The objective of our work is to investigate the content of oligomers in polyester at our market and to form on this basis the procedures for alkaline pre- treatment, or if possible, even for alkaline dyeing polyester. We intend to include into our research assortiments of disperse dyes fast to alkali available at the market, to try suitable pH stabilizers and to investigate the influence of the content of water hardening salts and iron in technological water for dyeing. By introducing alkaline dyeing the number of finishing phases for PES fibres could be reduced from seven phases that are required by conventional high- temperature acid dyeing to only three phases. The most important thing, however, is that after alkaline dyeing PES has a silk- like soft touch that gives more natural appearance to the products.
