Abstract
Prospective study, employed at General hospital Celje (GHC), is based on a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach toward promotion of the optimal cost-effective utilisation of antimicrobials. The plan is to reduce drug''s cost and to improve antimicrobils prescribing in GHC.
A variety of mechanisms will be used in GHC to enhance the appropriate use of antimicrobials. Techniques include the use of antimicrobial order sheets, automatic stop orders, therapeutic substitution, antibiotic restriction systems, targeted drug programs including ongoing drug-use evaluation and review, and administrative interventions such as usage/practice guidelines. Less forceful measures include varius educational strategies aimed at changing physican -prescribing practices.
Hospital expenditures on antimicrobial drugs, antimicrobial management practice, and the pharmacoeconomic effect of these practices are studied. Development and impementation of an antimicrobial order form is described.
Special efforts are made to educate physican and to change prescribing habits.
Polices are implemented to modify antibiotic use, including formulary manipulations, antibiotics stop order forms, oral switching. Form include special red list of antibiotics, which can be used only after consultation.
Considering the widespread use of antibiotic control program, further investigation of the success of such programs in optimising drug therapy, improving patient outcome and curtailing tha antibiotic budget is expected.
