Abstract
The research and development work deals with the isolation and further treatment of substances from natural materials. In our laboratory we have developed a new process for the isolation of antioxidative components from the Labiatae family of domestic spices (Rosemary, Sage, Oregano and Thyme). The product, named ROS Spice Oleoresin, contains a high fraction of antioxidant components, while most of the chlorophyll and essential oils are removed during extraction. The extract is of high value, environment-friendly and therefore suitable for a wide variety of applications. The factory Pinus has founded, in co-operation with the Laboratory for Separation Processes at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of the University in Maribor, the »Center for Isolation of Natural Substances« (CINS) which is located in the Štajerski tehnološki park in Pesnica at Maribor. In 1998 the production equipment was mounted and trial production was started. The aim was to verify the laboratory process for the isolation of antioxidative components from Rosemary and the production of greater amounts of the extract for product advertising on the market. The isolated antioxidative extract was sold to known foreign customers. The product contained a high fraction of antioxidative components (app. 35%) and had a strong stability effect in fats. In addition, research work on products and processes in the field of high pressure technologies is also performed within this project: - the use of supercritical fluids (SCF) as solvents in extraction processes
