Abstract
A grammatical description of the 16th century literary language will base on an alphabetically arranged file containing about 3 million index cards. This citation file was acquired through a complete excerption of the 16th century Protestant literature. Problem-oriented review, selection and excerption will provide corpus material necessary for individual research projects serving the needs of the common objective. The systemic features will be established in two ways: through excerptions of an individual word, and through comparison of the corpus-material for a given word class. Results of previously performed analyses and theoretical achievements of Slovenian and other linguists will be taken into account.
The grammatical description of the 16th century literary language will provide concise information on the then language system, but above all it will be used as a theoretical basis in the compilation of the Dictionary of the 16th Century Slovenian Protestant Writers. The richness of the language will be shown through entries analysed on both meaning and register levels, and furnished with usage notes and illustrations of their orthographic, phonetic, morphological and syntactical features. This dictionary will provide a basis for comparative studies in the development of the Slovenian language and exhaustive information for comparative Slavonic linguistic studies. Its indirect contribution will be in the consolidation of Slovenian national and historical awareness. At the same time, this research project will result in a broader choice of sample dictionary descriptions, also suitable for the modern lexicography.
A gradual improvement of the grammatical description is planned. Attention will be focused on multi-level grammatical descriptions of the noun, the adjective and the verb. The treatment of individual interesting topics will be harmonized with current needs in lexicography. Achieved results, even partial, will be simultaneously presented through studies and articles.
