Abstract
The project focuses on finding technological solutions for the most problematic municipal waste that is currently sent to incineration or burial. The reason is mainly the inefficiency of suitable sorting and processing technologies that would enable the cascade use of new recycled raw materials from this waste. Since the old EU directive allowed incineration under certain conditions, the technology development market was focused on efficient incinerators and not so much on sorting and processing technologies. The overall goal of the project is to find and test advanced technological solutions for sorting and processing that enable the cascade use of recovered raw materials from waste. The expected change includes increasing the circularity of materials, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, and reducing waste management costs. By testing new technologies such as gasification, liquefaction and carbonization, the project will create added value and contribute to a faster circular transformation of the bilateral area.
Significance for science
The project will deliver the following impact indicators: (1) Increased number of organisations that will continue to cooperate across borders after the end of the project: The target value is six organisations that will establish lasting partnerships. (2) Waste sorting and processing solutions: At least two technological solutions will be tested and implemented. (3) Improved capacity and knowledge of cross-sectoral stakeholders: Increased capacity and ability to introduce new technologies will contribute to reducing municipal waste in the region. Project beneficiaries include local and regional authorities, industry, research organisations and wider civil society, who will benefit from improved waste management solutions and reduced environmental burdens.
The project approach is based on cross-sectoral and inter-regional cooperation, where partners from both sides of the border will work together to find and test the best technological solutions for municipal waste sorting and processing. The project will involve all key stakeholders from four sectors (quadruple helix), which will enable a comprehensive and inclusive approach. Cross-border cooperation is key to solving challenges that transcend national borders and provide solutions tailored to the specific needs of the participating regions.
The project brings innovative approaches to waste management by integrating advanced technologies that have not yet been tested in the participating regions. The specificity of the project also lies in the cross-border cooperation, which combines knowledge and experience from different sectors and enables the creation of sustainable solutions that will have a long-term positive impact on the environment and economy in both countries. With this project, we want to increase the cascading use of raw materials, which represents an important step forward in the circular transition of the economy.
