Abstract
Infectious diseases spreading among farm and small home animals can cause reduced production and reproduction and economically important losses. Genetic potential can be also reduced in some animal species. Molecular and immunological methods are fundamental for animal disease diagnosis and in health monitoring. The development of modern molecular genetic methods contribute to improve accurate diagnosis of infectious and economically important viral diseases caused by pestiviruses; classical swine fever virus and bovine viral diarrhoea virus, foot-and-mouth disease virus, herpesviruses, Newcastle disease virus, bursal disease virus and rhabdoviruses. Our research is focused on detection and isolation of viruses, bacteria and other causative agents of salmon fish diseases. Antigenic characteristics of Borrelia burgdorferi which is also transmitted to man is studied in animal liquids. Differentiation between invasive and non-invasive Salmonela species is important in animal pathology and food hygiene. Focus is given to develop modern molecular and other research methods in the field of microbiology important for animal pathology inclusive large farm animals, small and wild animals and honeybees among insects. Contemporary methods in honeybee pathology and biology are used in basic and applied research. Emphasis will be given to study the influence of environmental infectious and non-infectious agents to adult honeybee and larvae on cellular level. Pathology, immunology, disease diagnosis and farming of fresh water fish are studied as an important field of research in veterinary medicine. Development of genetic molecular methods to study sensitivity to prion protein in native sheep species in Slovenia will help to preserve the genetic material of high importance.
