Abstract
The programme Etymological Dictionary of the Slovene Language provides interpretations in terms of etymology and comparative linguistics of Slovene literary, dialectal and just historically-recorded common- and proper-noun vocabulary. Interpretations of individual lexemes are given on the basis of a critical synthesis of the existing interpretations with, in many cases, additional new arguments for better and even completely new solutions. The programme has been creating a critical synthesis of etymological and comparative research of the Slovene vocabulary, which will demonstrate the formal and semantic specificity of the Slovene vocabulary with respect to its Slavic and other Indo-European related languages. The past has shown that due to the specific genesis of the Slovene language the quality of etymological and comparative-historical interpretation of the whole Slovene lexical stock depends on the number of linguistic levels encompassed in research (synchronous literary Slovene language, dialectal Slovene, historical, pre-historic Slovene language, Proto-Slovene language, Slavic dialects, Proto-Slavic, Balto-Slavic, Indo-European, Indo-European dialects, Proto-Indo-European), and thus on the number of languages included in the research. In contrast to other Slavic and European national etymological dictionaries, the research programme has been drafted to follow the origin of individual lexical units from their confirmed existence in the Slovene language to their first formal (and not only semantic) origin. This concept produces linguistic knowledge which provides multi-layered information for the Slovene as well as for the wider linguistic sphere.
Significance of the research programme for science in a global sense
The programme synthesises the existing and, at the same time, creates new linguistic knowledge about the formal and semantic constitution of the Slovene lexical stock of common and proper nouns, and thus indirectly provides linguistic information on the genesis of the Slovene language itself. All this knowledge about the Slovene language is pivotal for etymological and comparative-historical research in closely related Slavic, and more distantly related other Indo-European languages, as well as for the same type of research in unrelated languages (e.g. Hungarian) when it involves linguistic interaction. The achievements of the proposed research programme are, therefore, an important source of information for European national comparative linguistics (Germanic, Romance and Croatian language studies, etc.) as well as for Indo-European studies in general. Research groups and individuals in Europe and elsewhere, who deal with the language from the etymological and comparative-historical aspect have been drawing on information offered by the publication Etymological Dictionary of the Slovene Language, and expect us also in future to continually supply further information by regular synthetic publishing of the mentioned dictionary.
Significance of the research programme in Slovenia
The Etymological Dictionary of the Slovene Language is an important factor in creating knowledge about our material and intellectual culture, and at the same time an important source of linguistic information for Slovene and foreign linguists in individual research centres in Europe and elsewhere. The proposed programme is therefore important insofar as it represents Slovene science abroad (applicability of information for foreign linguists), and at the same time the results of the programme are an essential source of information for other individual Slovene specialist linguistic (e.g. synchronous and (pre)-historic dialectology, terminology, etc.) and non-linguistic sciences (e.g. archaeology, history, law, etc.). The information created by this research programme also presents a fundamental source for transformation for lay purposes and will be welcomed by people involved in cultural education (schools, media, etc.).
