Abstract
In civil engineering the use of computers has a relatively long tradition. However, because computers have been used in the framework of old organizational schemes, new information technology didn't bring the progress it could. The expected solutions are based on new organizational concepts that will optimise the processes in the life cycle of construction objects, and will exploit the potentials of new information technologies. Research will be mainly focused on two fields. First, on the field of construction information technology, where new, more applicable product and process models will be developed (we have anticipated the model of the building as the basic carrier of the information flow in the life-cycle of the building). For this purpose deeper analyses of building objects will have to be done, from the viewpoint of data structures and information flows in different phases of the life-cycle, classification and modelling of different classes of building objects, cooperation in standardization of product models, and cooperation with other research groups working on the same field. Secondly, research will focus on processes in the life cycle of the building from the viewpoint of building organisation, economy and technology. The results will open the possibilities of optimising organisational, economical and technological schemes according to the potentials of information technology in civil and building engineering – especially by using product and process models as the basis of information flows. In parallel we can expect improvement of process integration, and quality and accessibility of information. The research programme approaches to the problems from two supplementing viewpoints, which are expected to synergistically support the rise of civil engineering to a higher organization level.
