Abstract
The proposed research programme has two tasks. The first is a long-term study of Slovene terminology and encompasses keeping records, analysis and interpretation of the issues of terminology and dictionaries of terminology, the drawing up of a normative general technical glossary, a normative legal-historical glossary, quadri-lingual glossary of theatre terms, quadri-lingual normative mountaineering glossary, normative glossary of biological terms, and monographs of Slovene terminology and dictionaries of terminology. The work has been carried out on a commission basis. The commissions consist of resident linguists and non-resident experts of different professions. The research in Slovene terminology from the modern and historical aspect has been underway for some time. The results will be published in a monograph. The findings are intended to shed light on Slovene methods of nomenclature and word formation, and demonstrate and assess dictionaries of terminology and lexicographers. The second task is the compilation of the glossary of the language of Slovene Protestant writers from the 16th century. The basis for its gradual realisation are the almost completed extensive and demanding preliminary works. The complete extraction of 47 works and comparative extraction of one work, that is all preserved works by Slovene Protestant writers, resulted in the compilation of over three million of cards. The majority of the card-file has been alphabetically systemized. In addition to checking the accuracy of entries, the high quality of the material, which constitutes a rich source for a number of linguistic studies, has also been achieved through the method of copying the photocopied text excerpts. The compilation of a trial volume is in its final stages. The glossary of the language of Slovene Protestant writers will provide much information. Entries and sub-entries will be presented in detail in terms of writing and orthography, morphology, word formation, and particularly in terms of semantics and consequently syntax and partly even style. Phonetic and morphological versions will be assessed with respect to frequency, and thus hierarchically placed with respect to the establishing norm. The glossary will include information on synonyms and antonyms, and if necessary explanations on the origin of words and meanings. A task less topical than that stated above is the compilation of partial, thematically whole and inverse glossaries. Parallel to the lexicographic work, linguistic research will be carried out. It will be guided by and coordinated with lexicographical needs, but partly it will be independent. They will primarily focus on individual, less-studied segments of the literary-language system of the 16th century. The goals of the programme include the gradual compilation of a synthetic grammatical description of the literary language of the 16th century, which is to serve as a basis for comparative establishment of later developmental changes in the literary language. Research will be carried out partly in the established method, but it will also include modern methodological approaches. It will derive from Slovene linguistic tradition and take into consideration the achievements of global linguistics. Significance of the research programme for science in a global sense The projected lexicographical works and related linguistic research will constitute a major gain not only for Slovene but also for Slavic and universal linguistics. The crucial importance of the research into Slovene terminology is the preservation thereof as well as keeping in step with global science with Slovene terms. The uniqueness of the glossary of the literary language of Slovene Protestant writers is guaranteed by its limitation to a very productive initial period of the development of Slovene literary language and by the method of complete extraction of texts. Complete materials call for original demonstration methods, which could be ap...
