Abstract
The proposed research program is based on acquiring and transfer of knowledge particular to energy, process, and environmental engineering. The research program is therefore broad and interdisciplinary, consisting of natural and engineering science fields further developed and updated with new scientific and practical achievements. To support this mission we are performing in-depth research in the areas of fluid mechanics, transport phenomena in fluids and solids, thermodynamics, dynamics of reacting flow, process engineering processes whereby we develop own software tools using boundary element method as well as use existing commercial code packages. These activities further lead into theoretical and practical development of applied knowledge necessary for design, development , optimization, and control of processes, devices, thermal and hydraulic systems as well as integral solutions in power, processes, and environmental engineering. The application part of the research program in the area of process engineering consists of interdisciplinary research in the area of trustworthy, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly manufacturing, combustion, transformation, transport, and use of energy. The fundamental research necessary to support and accelerate development of modern technologies at home and abroad consist of thermal and hydraulic machinery, internal combustion engines, and research in the area of safe operation and decommissioning of nuclear power installations. Process engineering is particularly interdisciplinary. The research consists mainly of material and energy flows in particular devices, and process systems as a whole. We are also working in the area of mechanical and thermal separation processes of single and multiphase flows as well as in the area of modern HVAC systems in industrial and home environment. The emphasis is also on practical use of process engineering knowledge in various environmental technologies such as gas, water, soil purification, waste management etc. Modeling control, and research of industrial and domestic effluents on enviroment is also forming significant part of the research work including colloidal systems in water solutions using theory of double electrical layer.
Significance for science
The proposed research program can largely contribute to development and understanding of the physics of the problems in the area of power, process, and environmental engineering. Therein one benefits from development of own software tools aimed at solving large systems of interdependent differential equations describing most physical processes and phenomena in our area of expertise. Trough this work we also influence development of software tools in other environments. Use of own and commercial software tools is enabling faster and more efficient experimental work which is of particular importance especially during applied work in the area of thermal and process engineering as well as interconnecting those areas in integral system to support effective research work of interdisciplinary character.
Significance for the country
There is twofold significance of proposed research program for Slovenia. Firstly, research and teaching faculty working within the framework of proposed research program is provided with motivated research work thereby increasing the level of own knowledge. This is a key point in educating young professionals who are thereby directly connected to new scientific development in their areas of expertise. Secondly, Slovenia will benifit from aplications stemming from research by members of the team as the research program designed to enable efficient transfer of scientific and research achievements into the industrial environment which can significantly help Slovenia's technology development and ability to solve complex questions in the area of process, and environmental engineering. This is further enabled by flexible and open structure of proposed research program which enables inclusion of particular applied research projects on different levels of research work or own solution of the problems which will be largely aided by knowledge obtained during proposed research program. These project can be either solutions of particular problems within the framework of proposed research program, or parts of larger, complex applied research problems solved in collaboration with other research and development institutions of Slovenian enterprises, research institutes, and faculties.
