Abstract
The projects of the research group concentrate on the study of inter- and cross-cultural relations in the mediation and reception of foreign-language literatures (mainly English, German, some Slavonic languages etc.) in terms of historical, aesthetically, theoretical, and critical aspects. They expand into the area of cultural studies.
The main objectives of the projects are to determine the functions and the paradigms of literature which are essential for the individual’s harmonious development as well as for their broader intellectual, cognitive, and emotional flexibility, as it ensures their adaptability to the demands of a globalised society and its changes, in guaranteeing its variety and differentiation, necessary for the creation and conservation of cultural identities. Moreover, as aesthetic discourses work through otherness, the awareness of social patterns and rules, by modelling the world through language etc., literary texts are considered to be a privileged social site and system for the confrontation with the other, the different and the unknown: thus they are laboratories for the confrontation of the readers with all the factors which dissolve democratic processes, perpetuate individual and collective phantasms and taboos, consequently leading to fundamentalisms. On the other hand, they enhance the creation of a culture of conflict, which is a solid basis of democratic citizenship, of tolerance for the different and the other and of peaceful communication and Cupertino. As a space of freedom and unlimited possibilities, literature widens the individual’s cognitive frame, sharpens their consciousness of the ideologisation of discourses and cultural practices, their social construction and the possibilities of change. All these processes tend to disclose themselves particularly while observed through intercultural perspectives.
The main research areas of the group are:
1. Reception studies of the above languages, covering a wide geographical area (from the neighbouring countries to Germany, Great Britain, USA, and Australia) as well as time span (from the MA to modern times). Cross/cultural and multilingual aspects are especially interesting in the texts of immigrants and in the multicultural atmosphere of the Austrian monarchy and of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
2. Literary history and the study of intercultural contacts and relations.
3. Literature in the classroom: the intercultural theoretical and didactic models develop original solutions for the mediation of literary texts, narrative discourses and foreign cultures by insisting on the difference of the aesthetic discourse and on cultural differences.
4. Literary theory: besides the above mentioned areas, the main accents are on feminist and gender criticism as important factors of the acculturation and socialisation of readers. Another field of research is multilingual aesthetics and its conceptualisation in view of its growing importance through migration and globalisation.
5. Theory and practice of literary translation: translation of literary texts has emerged as a central intercultural research area, where the functioning of different cultural, linguistic and literary codes can be studied in detail.
The results of the research are applicable in a wider public frame for the creation of a culture of peaceful co-operation and on all levels of education, dealing with foreign languages and cultures.
