Abstract
The programme includes basic researches into Slovene visual arts, from the late Middle Ages to modern era, and embraces architecture, sculpture, painting with graphic art, and applied arts. Special attention is focused on the art of Baroque and the 19th century, the two periods that have not been adequately investigated yet, since older generations of Slovene art historians mostly directed their research to the Middle Ages. The research into Baroque painting has also reached, apart from the eccleasiastical art, into the less investigated secular sphere, with a special emphasis laid on the connections and comparisons with the contemporary European production of prints. The research into sculpture is particularly focused on stone works in which Baroque sculpture in Slovenia reached the peak of its quality. Besides, special attention has also been paid to Baroque sculpture in central Slovenia, poorly studied so far. Similarly, the research into architecture has also been directed to a poorly investigated area, that is the sacred and secular architecture in the Primorska region of Slovenia. Continued has also been the research of the 19th century architecture. Besides the documentation (together with photographic documentation) of the art monuments carried out on the site, the institute's research work is vitaly based on a thorough and planned investigation of archival sources. This makes possible that the studies also reach into a wider cultural-historical sphere.
