Abstract
Present technology of leather production is not environmentally sound, because it is connected with relatively high quantities of wastewater and solid wastes. There are different trials worldwide and also partial technological solutions enabling realisation of some production phases in environmentally more acceptable way. Unfortunately this solutions are not applicable for all types of leather, especially they were not tested in pigskin leather production, which is most important product of Slovenian leather industry. The aim of the project is to develop the production technology for some types of pigskin leather, for which environmentally friendly technologies and auxiliarics will be applied. The following characteristics of the process will be pointed out: - chromium-free tanning, - lower water consumption and load, - casier management of wastes and used products. First phase of experimental work, based on chrome-free tanning, will be carried out on the laboratory scale. Selected versions of leather will be retanned and finished in different ways, looking for two types of leather: - soft and more heat resistant leather for garment production, - full and firmer leather for shoes, leathergoods and upholstery. More successful technologies will be transferred on the pilot-scale for optimisation and preparation of commercial leather samples.
