Abstract
Severe infection is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Diagnosis of severe infection in the critically ill newborns and children is often difficult because of non-specific clinical and routinely used laboratory markers of infection. Critically ill newborns and children with both medical and surgical diseases suspected of having severe hospital infection will be included in the study. Dynamics of blood concentration of procalcitonin (PCT), IL-6 and IL-8 will be compared with leukocyte count and differential and concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP). Concentration of inflammatory markers will be correlated with severity of disease (PRISM-paediatric risk of mortality score) and type of isolated microorganisms. 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy will be used to study phosphate metabolites in red blood cells in severe infection and other shock states. The value of PCT and IL-6 determination in comparison with CRP will be studied also in children with oncological diseases with febrile neutropenia
