Abstract
The aim of the project in this stage is a thorough presentation of the urban entities on the whole territory of today's Republic of Slovenia in the Middle Ages and early modern times. The subject-matter will be carefully analysed and presented in thematic units. The final goal of the project is an encyclopedically conceived study (series) on Slovenian towns on the model of the series entitled »Oesterreichisches Städtebuch«, published by the Austrian Academy for Sciences and Arts. Slovenia would thus be provided with a reliable overview of the history of its towns, applicable not solely in social and some other sciences, but likewise in the sphere of public service. Comparability with the results obtained by other European researchers gives considerable weight to the project. The work on the project will comprise four types of activities:1. Research in the archives and presentation of results with the emphasis on comparative study of structural questions as well as application of approved Middle-European approaches;2. Synthesis based on scientific studies, scholarly treatises and articles;3. Examination of relevant theoretical problems and determination of corresponding Slovenian technical terminology;4. Compilation of bibliography.Hypothesis: despite their smallness, the urban entities of Slovenian territory did not substantially lag behind the Middle-European towns; to a higher degree, they were, however, exposed to Mediterranean influences. The research will cover 25 historical towns in today's Slovenian state. To a certain extent, the towns of the neighbouring countries, more closely connected with Slovenian territory, will also be taken into consideration and adequately dealt with.Themes: 1.
