Abstract
The research project Ethnological studies of Slovene and Other Cultures is one of the main ethnological research projects being conducted in Slovenia. In various ways, it deals with past and present cultural forms within the Slovene common ethnic territory, cultural variety and richness, Slovene contacts with the world, and the interconnections and disjunctions among cultures. It takes into account comparative and historical aspects of the emergence, preservation and changeability of traditions and identities. The project combines various themes, ranging from basic empirical ethnographic studies to theoretical approaches to ethnology and anthropology. The framework of the main project at the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology includes the following research topics:Slovene Mythology in the Framework of Intercultural Comparison (Prof. Zmago Šmitek)The Role and Meaning of Cultural Heritage in the Formation of the Identity of Modern Slovene Society with respect to International Relations (Prof. Janez Bogataj)The Balkans as the “Other Europe” (Prof. Božidar Jezernik)Slovene Contacts with Africa (Dr. Borut Brumen, lecturer)Ethnological Aspects of Modern Rural and Urban Development – from Cultural Heritage to Application (Dr. Vito Hazler, lecturer)The Urban Environment as the Stage for Cultural Schismogenesis – A Comparative Analysis of Music Venues (Dr. Rajko Muršič, lecturer)The History of the Discipline: Questions and Approaches (Dr. Ingrid Slavec Gradišnik, lecturer)Religious Specialists in Beliefs, Folk Literature, Customs and Rituals (Dr. Mirjam Mencej, assistant)Cultural Policy and Cultural Management in Protected Areas in Slovenia (Peter Simonič, assistant)Ethnological Documentation - from Practice to Theory (Mihaela Hudelja, documentarian)Current and Retrospective Ethnological Bibliography (Damjana Žbontar, librarian)Ethnological research methods are based on field work. Most of the research will be done in the field in Slovenia and abroad. Other methods will also be used, such as the comparative, historiographic and statistical methods. In addition to oral and other sources collected in the field, researchers will use other sources and literature housed in various research and preservation institutions and archives, libraries and other documentation centres in Slovenia and abroad. The initial hypothesis of the research project is that ethnological research of Slovene and other cultures will bring us a new perspective on cultural identity and heritage as a factor in adaptation to modern cultural trends. Familiarity with the heritage and understanding the interrelations of the cultures is an important part of facing the challenge of joining European and global integration trends.
