Abstract
The project The Imagination in Slovenian Late Middle Ages will be orientated to the research of the imaginary which is constituted as an assembly of different representations of of the 15th and 16th century period. Three major groups may be considered as constituents of prevailing mentalities and ideas, and we can structure them as a triangle. On one side we are faced with a still decisive Catholic Church that is losing its power. The corruption of the dignitaries, the indulgences, simony and other vices were destroying it inside so that it was urged to make some compromises. In the 15th century one can see a shift, the church space is becoming more and more pleasant and delightful, the imaginary is changing, the space is now like Heaven. At that time Heaven was the goal of the individual Christian life, and at the same time the end of the cosmic plan, and we can find the image of it in every single Slovenian church built or redecorated during that time. Another factor, destroying the catholic fight, was the growth of Protestantism ideas. It is surprisingly soon that one can find the first very daring antipapalia in Slovenian art as for example the image of the fox the pilgrim in the church of Marsici dated 1515. The imaginary of the Protestantism is reflected not only in visual arts but also in the writings of the protestant clergy. The third factor is a heresy, new forms of popular believers, who built new sanctuaries, gathered in masses an venerated the pagan idols. We can assume that these forms of heresy, the heretics, as they are named and very soon prosecuted not only by the Catholic Church but also by Protestants, actually derived from Friuli and constructed in Slovenian teritory their own imaginary.
