Abstract
Chronic posttraumatic osteitis is a difficult-to-treat and debilitating complication of trauma. The part of the bone involved in the chronic inflammatory process is ishaemic and infected by bacteria. The antibiotic treatment is complicated for pharamacokinetic reasons and altered metabolism of the bacteria in the necrotic bone tissue. Some recent reports suggest the role of fungi in the bone inflammatory process. Since fungi are not influenced by antibiotics, the presence of the fungal infection may cause the treatment failure. In a proposed research project we will try to prove the hypothesis of the fungi as pathogens in the chronic posttraumatic osteitis by isolating them from the inflammed bone tissue. The influence of antimycotics on the course of the disease in patients infected by fungi will be observed.
