Abstract
This research project will consider the position of small and medium size enterprises under the membership of European Union. Small business is the nucleus of each national economy, it is obvious, that each State tries, individually as well as a member of the EU, to protect its small companies and so to contribute to the stability of it's economy. The interests of the member States can be in accord or in conflict with the interests of the EU, which aims towards the harmonisation of the regulation concerning business and trade in the internal market. However the EU itself is conscious of the importance of the small economy. Therefore the small and medium size enterprises are subject of the special regulation under European Community, which protects and safeguards their special position. The aim of this project is to research and analyse these rules, their interpretation and application by the individual member States and the EU Institutions them selves. On the bases of research data it will be possible to draw conclusions regarding the Slovene small business once the full membership becomes reality.
