Abstract
Optimization of performance of biological wastewater treatment plant (aerobic, anaerobic) is necessary to meet emission standards, set by Slovenian legislation, which has been harmonized with European Union. Characterization of different types of wastewaters according to its toxicity and biodegradability will lead to implementation of appropriate measures to assure and maintain effective operation of biological wastewater treatment plant. Performance of the treatment plant is due to the variable composition of the influent, which affect its toxicity and biodegradability. Laboratory tests and simulations will link the changes in the influent to operation of wastewater treatment plant and to the quality of the effluent. Methodology will identify hazardous substances and possible pre-treatment methods will be proposed. Developed methodology will enable to manage wastewater treatment plant well and reduce the impact of wastewater discharge on the recipient.
