Abstract
Research on food habits has shown that in contemporary welfare societies the food scares and food concerns related to health, cultural and social risks are ever more present and more pronounced. The food related issues are susceptible to scares for three main reasons: a) because the consumption of health risk food can present a serious hazard to health; b) many health and food related issues are of a trans-scientific nature; d) scientific and technological innovations in the area of food production, processing, storage and transport have been so successful that they significantly increased the public's expectations regarding the food quality and food safety. In the study we will seek to establish first to what an extent (if at all) concern about food related risks is present in Slovenia. We will try to find out what people are concerned about and how they justify their concerns. Furthermore, we will be interested in how (if at all) their concern affects their food practices (e.g. food shopping, cooking, eating). As a part of our research interest we will try to answer the question which types of food concern bring about genuine changes in food habits, which lead to symbolic changes only, and which do not cause any changes whatsoever. Another issue that we find important is how the (absence of) concerns is manifested in various socio-demographic groups of society.
