Abstract
The aim of the present project is to restate the importance of the physical allegoresis of Homer for Vergil's Aeneid, particularly in connection with the tradition of the genre, and to investigate some further aspects of epic allegorism hitherto neglected, especially the relevance of moral and eschatological allegoresis to the Aeneid. The second goal of the project is to redefine the role of this poem as the initial point of a tradition of allegorizing epic poetry ranging from silver Latin, early Christian, to medieval and later European epic.
