Abstract
With respect to the artistic heritage of the Adriatic rim, the role of the classical tradition has hitherto been studied with particular emphasis on Venice and Padua. This interdisciplinary project will, in turn, focus on other urban centers in the region. Its aim is to examine the varying modes of reception and perception of classical antiquity in the light of political, economic, social and cultural diversity characteristic of the mediterranean Europe between 1400 and 1700.Taking advantage of the geographic position of Slovenia, the project team will systematically examine several remarkable instances of the survival and revival of the classical past in Istria (esp. in Koper, Izola, Piran, Poreč, Pula) and Dalmatia (esp. in Zadar, Trogir, Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor) as well as in the land-locked Carniola (esp. Ljubljana) and Styria (esp. Celje and Ptuj). These four representative regional case studies carry the promise of important new insights into the cultural similarities as well as differences between the mostly Venetian-dominated Adriatic coast on the one side, and the south-eastern tip of the Holy Roman Empire on the other. The research work itself will center round the creation of two complementary data bases. In a shared effort with the Census of Antique Works of Art and Architecture Known in the Renaissance, the first is envisaged as a catalogue raisonne of visual and textual records of those Istrian, Dalmatian, Carniolan, and Styrian antiquities that attracted attention of artists and scholars in the Early Modern period. The second data base will encompass the fifteenth-, sixteenth- and seventeenth-century paintings and sculptures representing themes from ancient history and Graeco-Roman mythology, which shall be examined side by side with pertinent literary texts and visual records. One of the project's organizational goals is to foster active participation of Slovenian scholars in international research efforts.
