Abstract
The goal of the project is the design and realization of an interface between Ethernet and SHDSL technologies, that enables data transfers with several Mb/s speeds on one or multiple copper pairs over distances up to 4 km. The whole project is based on a notion of a universally applicable module. The module of Ethernet - SHDSL transmission system is going to be directly used as an upgrade to the currently available E1 - SHDSL transmission system. Ethernet - SHDSL transmission system interconnects local Ethernet networks with other networks of the same type or enables access to backbone access networks, both on distances of several km. It is composed of an Ethernet media access controller (MAC), processor with suitably sized memory and interface unit to communication buses. A maximum sustained throughput of 32 Mb/s is envisioned between local Ethernet network and remote SHDSL users, using up to 8 copper pairs in multi-pair bonded configuration. The module is going to integrate realtime operating system kernel with parts of TCP/IP protocol that are required to realize functions of Ethernet bridge (IEEE802.1d or RFC1483/2364), basic router functionality with additional network remote management and configuration be provided via SNMP protocol (RFC1157/1901/2570). There is a market niche to provide devices that enable Ethernet LAN interconnection services and access to Ethernet to much larger user base with proven SHDSL technology using currently available copper infrastructure, without any additional costs (as fiber installations to end-users), since it is possible to cover the whole carrier serving area in Slovenia (estimated to be 3600 m) and at least 85 % of it in other countires. This kind of soultion is very attractive for developing markets of Eastern Europe, South America and Middle East where population is psread over larger areas and distances outside concentrated urban areas.
